Cheap Plant Pots

Here’s a nifty tip that we happened upon by accident one year when we ran out of plant pots at a critical moment…  Disposable drinking cups make for very cheap plant pots!  Emma used to work in an office and, while there, kept the disposable cups from the drinks dispenser rather than throwing them away after use.   Then a few years back, when we were in need of some extra plant pots, we figured that disposable cups might work well…and they do!  They don’t keep as long as plant pots (they crack in the end) but if you happen to have a drinks dispenser at work, then rather than throw your used cups away…why not use them as free plant pots?

If you look at the post below, you’ll see one being used for our tomato seedlings.

I have a qtitauy of old plastic pots and trays. I am happy to clean and package them into plastic bags and deliver them to a local collecting point. Do you know of a suitable collecting point around the Selby-York area? Selby District do not support plant pot recycling and such material is dumped into land fill which I do not agree with. Interesting to hear your your comments. Thank you, Regards, G.Neal

Hi Neal. It’s great that you want to recycle your old pots. You could try contacting some of your local allotment organizations. Allotmenteers are often very happy to recycle and would be glad of some extra pots and trays. You might also like to try posting on Freecycle, which is a good place to give things away. Here’s the link to the Selby Freecyle group (http://groups.freecycle.org/freecycleselby/description). Hope you find someone who can use them.
