We are David and Emma (there is some ongoing rivalry as to who is head gardener!) and we have 4 children who love the garden and who (sometimes) share our love of vegetable gardening. They certainly enjoy eating the first strawberries before we get to them! We also have several hens who have yet to learn what they can and cannot eat in the garden.
We love our vegetable and fruit gardening and The Hidden Marrow is a diary about what we do, the type of vegetables we grow and how and when we do things. We first had a vegetable plot about 15 years ago, in which we grew a couple of courgettes and a few runner beans. Each year, the plot grew larger as we gained more and more enthusiasm – who can resist the magic of watching those small dry seeds transform themselves into huge plants that produce the tastiest freshest veg you can eat? We now have a veg plot that we think is big enough, a fruit cage, and a greenhouse (which we absolutely love).
In amongst the garden chatter, we hope to provide some useful tips on fruit and veg gardening that we’ve discovered along the way and we’ll continue to try new varieties and methods of growing and let you know the findings. We like our cooking and eating too, so expect a few recipes and cooking tips to creep in occasionally.
Why ‘The Hidden Marrow’? Well, for the last 15 or so years that we’ve been growing vegetables, we’ve always missed at least one courgette that grows into a monstrously large marrow. Perhaps this summer will be the first when we don’t find a Hidden Marrow!
We love hearing from new or seasoned gardeners so please feel free to leave comments or contact us.
