I use a proper cup measure that you can buy from kitchen shops. It holds 200ml of liquid. It does look a lot of oil, but it makes quite a large cake, and it doesn't taste or feel oily at all. You can always put a little less in. It's not the kind of cake where quantities are exact anyway.

How many grams make a cup? And doesn't a whole cup of oil seem far too much?

My understanding is that Herman is natural yeast based, so should easily cope with being refrigerated and might survive being frozen (yeast is a pretty hardy little thing!). I would however give Herman a few days to recover from his arctic expedition before the main process starts!

Anyone else frozen or refrigerated Herman with success (or otherwise)?

Let us know if Herman survives. We were told Herman couldn't even go in the fridge. But then we were also told to only ever stir the mixture with a wooden spoon. We used a metal spoon and Herman didn't come to any harm, so perhaps Herman would be fine in the fridge or freezer too.

Thanks for identifying him. We were secretly hoping he'd come back (he was very cute) but we've moved our grain bin away from the wall and I don't think he can get in anymore. The little fellow will have to work a bit harder for his food now.

It looks like a yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) to me. We've had them for several years visiting our bird-feeder. We're not trying to grow food, so we encourage them. They are very sweet if you're not worried about them stealing things.

I was given a Herman last week by a colleague from bar Calshot - I took him home to Romsey. Looking forward to baking him, might use a portion for bread using strong flour
