Water your Blueberries!

Now I know why they say you have to give your blueberries copious amounts of water throughout the season.  If you don’t, you get the tiniest blueberries.  We discovered this when we got back from holiday.  We grow our blueberries in pots and whilst we were away they received very little water.  The result, tiny blueberries.  Still tasty but just not as satisfying!

Delicious Blueberries

Blueberries

Everyone should try growing blueberries.  We’ve just had our first ones and they are delicious, so much tastier than those from the supermarket, and the texture is lovely, firm but not too hard.  They are very beautiful berries too, you can really see the colours and patterns on the fruit.  You often find that your fruit and veg looks so much fresher and healthier than the stuff you buy in the shops.  The other wonderful thing about blueberries is that they are very easy to grow.  They must have acid soil so are best grown in pots filled with ericaceous compost.  But they are pest and disease free, and they produce lots and lots of berries.  You do need to protect them from the birds though, otherwise you won’t see a single one.  We’ve got two plants but will definitely be getting some more.  Ours are both the same variety (Blue Crop) but if you get two different varieties you’re supposed to get a much bigger crop.  Now why didn’t we read that before we bought them!  They are also really easy to propagate.  When you come to pruning your plants, just trim your cuttings to about 8 inches long and stick them in some ericaceous compost so about 3 inches is left showing, what could be easier.  Don’t tell the kids, but we ate all of these before they got back from school, we just couldn’t stop ourselves!
