Leaf Curl from Aphids

Aphids are a nuisance! You just have to turn your back for a few days and you’ve got a brand new population. I don’t know whether they are enjoying the weather conditions this year, but they do seem particularly bad at the moment.  Ants running up and down your plants is a good indication that you’ve got aphids, and so is leaf curl.  Look what they’ve done to our redcurrant plant.

Aphids Causing Leaf Curl

When you open the leaves back there is just a mass of green aphids under there.  We’ve found squishing them works well.  When they look this infested though we tend to snap the top of the growth off, and scrunch it under our feet on the paving slabs.  That sorts the aphids out!  We’ll be pruning the redcurrants in November and we’ll be cutting all this years growth by a third, so we’re not losing much by taking the growing tip off now.  We’ll be checking the redcurrants regularly from now on to keep the aphids under control.

Redcurrant Blister Aphid on Redcurrants

One of our redcurrants has got redcurrant blister aphid.  This small aphid secretes a chemical which causes the leaves to blister and turn red.

Redcurrant Blister Aphid

Quite a lot of the leaves are showing these signs.  I’ve been spraying the underside of the leaves with a mild solution of Ecover washing-up liquid, which will hopefully stop the aphids in their tracks.  This is the first year we’ve grown redcurrants and, to be perfectly honest, I was fussing about it a bit, wondering where they’d come from, blaming the dry weather and checking the plant every day.  Then a couple of days ago, we were showing Peter, our neighbour and “veg growing guru”, around our patch.  We passed the redcurrants and I, almost apologetically, said that the leaves had been attacked.  He took one look, and very matter of factly said “oh they always get that.  It’s nothing to worry about!”  Now Peter has the most fabulous and prolific redcurrant bushes around and clearly knows what he’s talking about.  So… no more worrying… although I just can’t stop giving them the odd spray now and again!
