We’ve just had our first harvest of purple sprouting broccoli, and it was absolutely delicious. We steamed it for about 4 minutes so that it still kept it’s lovely green colour, and there was still a little bit of crunch. It had a great flavour, tasting fresher than the sprouting broccoli we’ve had in our veg box before, and the stems were very tender. We picked about 14 spears (all from one plant) which was just about enough for the six of us, but only because 2 of the kids weren’t that keen! As long as we keep picking the spears before the flower buds open, we should be harvesting broccoli over the next four to five weeks. It’s wonderful to be getting veg out of the garden at this time of year.

Excited about Purple Sprouting Broccoli
March 11, 2011
Hooray, we’ve waited almost a year, and now our purple sprouting broccoli is sprouting. This is the first time we’ve grown it so we are very very excited, and we are all looking forward to having the first spears lightly steamed (let’s hope there’s enough). To get a good crop of sprouting broccoli you need to pick it regularly, and you don’t want to let the flower buds on the spears open. If they do, then the plant will stop producing more spears and the season will be very short indeed. The spears are ready for picking when they are about 6 inches long so I reckon our first ones will be ready in about a week or so – yum!
